Mortalities of oyster seed of Crassostrea gigas associated with ostreid herpes virus OsHV-1 μVar have been observed in many oyster producing countries since 2008. The objective of this study was to further investigate whether low temperature treatments can offer a viable option to mitigate oyster mortalities. An experiment was set-up to further evaluate the effect of low temperature treatments (10 and 13°C vs. 21°C) and their duration (6 d to 83 d) on the survival of oysters previously infected with OsHV-1 μVar by means of exposure to field conditions in areas where mortalities were occurring. Average survival of oysters infected with OsHV-1μVar was 71% after 83 d at low temperatures compared to only 23% in controls maintained at 21°C. During... |

ABSTRACT: Citrus black spot (CBS) caused by Guignardia citricarpa is one of the most serious Brazilian citrus diseases. This study aims to assess the interference of three application volumes in spray deposition citrus fruit, as well as fruit growth and rainfall effects on spray deposit reduction during the CBS control period. The experiment was carried out in a commercial citrus orchard, with sixteen-year-old trees of the Valencia variety, in Mogi Guaçu, São Paulo State, Brazil. The spray volumes were: 3.5 (1333L ha-1), 4.5 (1714L ha-1) and 8.5 (3238L ha-1) litres per tree, sprayed by an airblast sprayer using fungicides at recommended periods for disease control. The spray deposition quantification and residue was done by spectrophotometry using a copper... |

Despite all efforts during the last four years to improve cloned newborn care, the mortality rate of calf after term is still high, around 50%. Clinical symptoms observed in these cloned calf were related to severe cardiopulmonary disorders like hyperphonese, diastolic and systolic cardiac murmurs associated to dyspnea and crackling lung sounds. Due to the patency of the Foramen Ovale and Ductus Arteriosus, in which causes the mix of arterial and venous blood, the blood oxygenation in these cloned calf is compromised. In addition, cloned calf could also present increased birth weight, hypoglycemia, hypothermia, umbilical cord abnormalities, anemia, and alopecia. |

The most known and certainly the most important contribution of genetics to the oyster indus try is the development of the triploid cupped oyster. Released for the first time in the 1980s, the triploid oyster has triplets of chromosomes instead of pairs. Currently, triploid oysters are obtained by crossing diploid and tetraploid oysters. These oysters are characterized by a near lack of milt in summer, which makes them generally popular with consumers, and by a faster growth, allowing a shorter production cycle. In parallel, the exploitation of natural resistance in the diversity of French oysters has been considered to improve the health of farmed populations which is a major challenge for the sustainability of aquaculture farms. Currently, the... |

Environmental change in the marine realm has been accompanied by emerging diseases as new pathogens evolve to take advantage of hosts weakened by environmental stress. Here we investigated how an exposure to reduced seawater pH influenced the response of the oyster Crassostrea gigas to an infection by the Ostreid herpesvirus type I (OsHV-1). Oysters were acclimated at pH 8.1 or pH 7.8 and then exposed to OsHV-1. Their survival was monitored and oyster tissues were sampled for biochemical analyses. The survival of oysters exposed to OsHV-1 at pH 7.8 was lower (33.5%) than that of their counterparts at pH 8.1 (44.8%) whereas levels of OsHV-1 DNA were similar. Energetic reserves, fatty acid composition and prostaglandin levels in oyster did not vary... |
